The BBC's latest drama "Babies" made its debut at Series Mania, exploring how a devoted couple navigates the devastating experience of losing pregnancies, alongside their circle of loved ones.

Creator and director Stefan Golaszewski shares with Variety before the festival that while he has personal experience with the subject matter, the series isn't a direct retelling of his own story.

Through his collaboration with Cullen and Essiedu, Golaszewski aimed to capture how a relationship transforms when facing its initial major challenge.

"Take the flashback sequence in the third episode – I wanted to reveal not only their relationship's origins but also the roots of their perspectives. The very attitudes creating friction in their current situation are the same ones that initially drew them together," he notes.

"Lisa confronts her anger directly – Stephen postpones it until it becomes inescapable. Their grief responses stem from their fundamental identities and upbringing."

Snowed-in Productions, Money Men Studios, and All3Media International produced the show, with the latter managing distribution.

Despite his cast's rising profiles, Golaszewski maintained authenticity: the characters' apartments appear genuinely inhabited, and financial concerns are constant. He acknowledges his intention to forge an emotional bond with viewers and "communicate honestly about their lived experiences."

"Much of the craft involves stripping away artifice to capture authentic truth – how people actually converse, dress, or inhabit their spaces. When asked about the color scheme, I'd think: we don't typically organize our lives by color! If Lisa and Stephen were older or more affluent, they might prioritize interior aesthetics. But they don't. There's a beautiful disorder and untidiness that represents reality more accurately."

Though the opening episodes depicting their heartbreak are "the most somber," joy emerges eventually.

"The narrative alternates between their initial romance and present circumstances, contrasting love's hopeful beginnings with their first major trial. One episode shows Stephen's optimistic facade completely crumbling. He's hit rock bottom and must find his way back. You witness people confronting their first shared trauma as partners, possibly as individuals too, and their resulting growth."

Regarding the show's message about love?

"It's essentially everything. Nothing else compares."

"Love becomes their lifeline. In many respects, this is simply a love story. Romance can involve partners separated by continents – China and L.A., for instance. This romance involves repeated pregnancy losses and the vanishing of youthful confidence they assumed was permanent. They must discover their identities and path forward."

While Golaszewski doesn't avoid depicting suffering, he aimed to offer viewers a "protected viewing experience."

"There's something significant about crafting content that enters people's homes, their most intimate spaces. Presenting this narrative with coldness and darkness wouldn't offer viewers anything constructive. I want them to feel more hopeful about existence after watching."

However, "Babies" won't continue beyond its initial run.

"It's a standalone piece," he emphasizes.

"I've created continuing series previously, but that can compromise the original vision's integrity and the intended narrative arc. Here, I believe the optimal version is this singular journey. It chronicles a couple's evolution from individuals untouched by trauma to those who've experienced it. That coming-of-age dimension feels complete within six hours."
