 What is a Promise Ring?

A promise ring can be described as a ring handed out by one person to one another in a relationship to express their loyalty and commitment, usually (but not always) before an engagement. A promise ring is a symbol of the commitment of one person to the relationship and it also signifies the same thing for the person receiving it.

What's the difference between a purity ring and a promise?

Sometimes, but certainly not always. Promise rings were a common reference to purity bands after Joe Jonas said in an interview with Details that his and his brothers rings represented "a promise we made to ourselves and God that we would be clean until we got married."

A few people have had the terminology confused. When you speak of abstinence and rings are given by parents to their children or to oneself, it's referred to as"purity ring. Promise rings, on the other hand are usually used as a mark of commitment within the confines of the romantic relationship.

Are they just for women--or are there rings that promise to men too?

It is possible to imagine that the man will give promises to a girl when you are introduced to the term "promise ring". But guy promise rings are quite common. Take Miley Cyrus or Liam Hemsworth, for example. Prior to getting married in the year 2018 Both Cyrus and Hemsworth both wore rings of promise. Certain couples present promise rings to one another. Sometimes, someone will offer a promise ring the other person as if they were making a promise or demonstrating how much the relationship is valued. Anyone can wear or give rings of promise.

What does an Promise Ring signify?

The promise ring symbolizes of a vow between two people. But, every couple will have their own personal meaning. "The attraction of the promise ring is derived largely from the multiple significances it has," says Kimberly Kanary, vice president of public relations and social media at Kay Jewelers. A majority of couples use or gift promise rings in order to signal that they are getting married, but others do it as a symbol of their love for one another.

"You're vowing to one another," explains Brooke Brinkman who is vice president of marketing and communications at Simon G. Jewelry, who was presented with a promise ring from husband of one year and a half before they got engaged. While in the Brinkman's scenario the ring represented the promise of an engagement in the future however, this isn't always the situation. "I often consider promise rings to be similar to the mid-century custom of giving your high-school partner a class ring, or pin," says Elizabeth Woolf-Willis, GG, AJP, marketing coordinator at Simon G. Jewelry. "Now you're no longer just "dating"--you are displaying a physical representation of your bond to show outside of your home."

 History of Promise Rings

Brinkman claims that the idea of the giving of an engagement ring as a sign of love and affection is several hundreds of years old. The tradition of wearing rings as a symbol of loyalty and fidelity also dates back to the early times. There is evidence that Roman brides were wearing engagement rings as early as the 2nd century BC. Rings engraved with romantic poetry date back to the 16th century of England. Acrostic rings - that write a word made of gemstones - became popular during the Georgian and Victorian period. As an example, a ruby and emerald ring, amethyst ruby, diamond spells "regard" and a diamond, emerald, amethyst, emerald, ruby amethyst topaz, sapphire and ruby spells "dearest".

Modern promise rings are rather recent fashion and are popularized by famous people such as the Jonas Brothers or Miley Cyrus/Liam Hisworth.
