Crafted over two years by a diverse team of experts,

this project merges experimental 4K and HDR with immersive audio.

The journey from concept to screen reflects a commitment

Transitioning to digital tablet drawing became essential,

as traditional methods posed scaling challenges for higher resolutions.

This shift highlights the evolving tools in anime production,

empowering creators to explore new artistic horizons.Located in Japan, Production I.G. proved to be the ideal collaborator for this ambitious venture. This renowned studio, celebrated for their work on iconic titles such as Ghost in the Shell and the animated sequences in Kill Bill, brought both expertise and passion to the table. Under the guidance of director Akira Saitoh, their compact yet exceptionally skilled team embraced the opportunity to pioneer 4K and HDR animation, demonstrating a willingness to rebuild their approach from the ground up.

The journey spanned two full years and presented numerous obstacles along the way.

Over the past two years, the development of Sol Levante has involved extensive collaboration among various stakeholders and subcontractors, each possessing differing levels of technological capability. The challenge was particularly evident in their ability to manage the high brightness and wide color spectrum inherent in HDR.

During the pre-production phase, director Saitoh meticulously balanced scenes, ensuring they captured both simplicity and intricate details. Animator Hisashi Ezura made precise adjustments to pen pressure for character outlines, as even minor tweaks in skin tone had a significant impact on their overall look.

A significant hurdle arose during the final shot rendering process, particularly with panning sequences that featured images far exceeding 4K resolution. This complexity led to several months of project delays. Nevertheless, the commitment to producing stunning 4K anime fueled the team's persistence.

Anticipating the advanced visual experience that Sol Levante aimed to deliver, the decision was made to enrich the experience with immersive audio. A distinguished sound team from the U.S. was enlisted, featuring sound mixer Will Files and sound designer Matt Yocum, who employed Dolby Atmos technology to help realize Saitoh’s creative vision. Will skillfully augmented the sound mix, integrating the original orchestral score composed by Emily Rice, which was uniquely captured using a 3D microphone.

Sol Levante ultimately stands as a sanctuary for enthusiasts who appreciate the artistry of anime.

Empowering Anime with Technology

To enhance the understanding of 4K HDR and immersive audio within the anime industry, we have made the resources utilized in Sol Levante publicly available.

This initiative aims to empower animators and creative professionals to gain deeper insights into these advanced technologies, fostering effective collaborations with manufacturers and helping anime studios seamlessly integrate these innovations into their work.

Upon completion of the project, director Saitoh remarked that “having access to 4K and HDR feels like obtaining wings and an engine, allowing us to explore new horizons and usher in a new era. We continuously aim to challenge ourselves and innovate for what's ahead.”

The relationship between art and science is historical, evident from inventions like the printing press to the evolution of film, radio, and DVDs. We chose the title Sol Levante, which translates to "the sun rising from the east" in Italian, symbolizing a new beginning for the anime community in Japan.

Our goal is to provide craftsmen in the field with opportunities to broaden their artistic endeavors in unique and original ways.
