As rumours linking Arsenal with further po sible summer signings, the thoughts of fans minds should not be one of needle s panic buying, but perhaps a more cautionary one what do we honestly need? To answer a question such as this properly, a closer look and the strengths and weakne ses of the current squad would seem justified. To start with the most recent of stories, the latest name to be linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium this year is Wigan Athletic striker Hugo Rodallega, a striker who is standing out at Wigan this season, despite their staggeringly at times inconsistent campaign.Tall, strong and good in the air, Rodallega has led the line well for the Lactics, also showing a liking for the big games, winning and scoring a penalty in the 3-1 win over Chelsea, as well as the winning goal against Liverpool. As well as the Columbian, there have been further reports of a summer move to North London for Bordeauxs Moroccan Striker Marouane Chamakh. A similar player to Rodallega, Chamakh is excellent in the air, and has risen to prominence in the last two years, helping his side to the French Ligue 1 title last season, as well as to the knockout stages of the Champions League this term. It has been, at times, hard to ignore the rumours linking Arsenal with the 26 year-old.Reported Arsenal target Marouane Chamakh lining up for MoroccoHowever, is there really an i sue with the striking options available to Arsne Wenger? At times, the current crop may have looked as though it is lacking strength in depth, but when the side has been without star man Robin van Persie for the of the season, as well as Andrey Arshavin, Nicklas Bendtner, Theo Walcott and Eduardo all for sustained periods of time at one point or another, it could be said that this was down more to poor lucky with injuries rather than a shortage up Dwight Clark Jersey front. As well as the i sue of whether there are enough players in the squad, the next question is are they good enough? This, however, is an extremely difficult question, given that the judging of a player is of course subjective; everybodys opinion is different. Every striker in the squad has, at one moment in their Arsenal career or another, shown that they have the required attributes to make it at the club, even, despite much criticism, Bendtner and Walcott.Bendtner has had a hard job in recent weeks, that of leading the line at a time when the games fall thick and fast, and are more pre sured than at any other time, but the Dane has put his all into it, coming up with some great performances and goals (although THAT game with his many horrendous mi ses did not make for particularly good viewing), including a Champions League hat-trick against Porto, the crucial last minute winner against Wolves last Saturday, and a gutsy performance at home to Barcelona and a goal away in the Camp Nou, where although isolated at time, won most ariel balls he challenge for, brought other players into play excellently, and helped Fabregas win his important penalty with a clever headed knock-down when most players wouldnt have seen the opportunity in the first leg.Gunners striker Nicklas Bendtner has played an important role this seasonWalcotts season has been well documented as being an extremely stop-start one due to many unfortunate injuries, but with a match-changing performance against Barcelona, flashes of real top-quality play against Wolves, and other great goals this season, Walcott clearly still does have the time to fulfil his blatantly vast potential. His pace is often spoken about as being a great weapon for good reason, as it really does frighten the life out of opposing defenders who are afraid to put a foot in, or, in the case of Barcelona left-back Maxwell, afraid to venture forward, cutting out a wide option for the Catalans which helped to swing the tie in Arsenals favour at the Emirates, as well as having a decent game in the Catalan capital in a difficult game for Arsenal, setting up the away sides goal and looking a constant threat to the european champions. The one persons opinion who does really matter is obviously Wenger himself, and the Frenchman has always seemed the type to keep faith in his players, especially when players are young and have shown glimpses of real, true quality (for example Carlos Velas few moments of brilliance last season in the Carling Cup). With a 4-3-3 system now being implanted by Wenger, more strikers than usual would be needed to cover up, but as well as those already mentioned, Samir Nasri, Tomas Rosicky, Jack Wilshere, and even Abou Diaby have all played upfront at some point in their Gunners career. Some of these, such as Vela and Wilshere may not be ready for top-flight action yet, and some, such as van Persie, are evidently injury-prone however. For this reason, two summer striking signings would seem unrealistic, but one would certainly be useful in case of a similar run of injuries next season. Mike McGlinchey Jersey
