    Australian lungfish (Neoceratodus forsteri: Dipnoi) have low genetic variation at allozyme and mitochondrial DNA loci: a conservation alert?
    Genetic variation at allozyme and mitochondrialDNA loci was investigated in the Australianlungfish, Neoceratodus forsteri Krefft1870. Tissue samples for genetic analysis weretaken non-lethally from 278 individualsrepresenting two spatially distinct endemicpopulations (Mary and Burnett rivers), as wellas one population thought to be derived from ananthropogenic translocation in the 1890's(Brisbane river). Two of 24 allozyme lociresolved from muscle tissue were polymorphic.Mitochondrial DNA nucleotide sequence diversityestimated across 2,235 base pairs in each of 40individuals ranged between 0.000423 and0.001470 per river. Low genetic variation atallozyme and mitochondrial loci could beattributed to population bottlenecks, possiblyinduced by Pleistocene aridity. Limited geneticdifferentiation was detected among rivers usingnuclear and mitochondrial markers suggestingthat admixture may have occurred between theendemic Mary and Burnett populations duringperiods of low sea level when the drainages mayhave converged before reaching the ocean.Genetic data was consistent with theexplanation that lungfish were introduced tothe Brisbane river from the Mary river. Furtherresearch using more variable genetic loci isneeded before the conservation status ofpopulations can be determined, particularly asanthropogenic demands on lungfish habitat areincreasing. In the interim we recommend amanagement strategy aimed at conservingexisting genetic variation within and betweenrivers.

    Beneficial use of meat and bone meal combustion residue: "an efficient low cost material to remove lead from aqueous effluent"
    Meat and bone meal (MBM) combustion residues, a natural apatite-rich substance, was evaluated as a low cost substitute for hydroxyapatite in lead sequestration from water effluents. The thermal behaviour of crude meat and bone meal was followed by TGA and 24% inorganic residue was collected. The resulting ashes were characterised by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), particle size distribution, specific surface area (BET), and elemental analysis confirming apatite contents, with high level of phosphate (56.3%) and calcium (36.8%). Mechanism and kinetics of lead removal by this bioinorganic material were investigated and compared to mechanisms and kinetics involved with synthetic apatite. Batch metal removal experiments were carried out with 500 and 1500 ppm (mg/kg) Pb 2+ solutions. Lead concentration, calcium and pH were monitored. We observed that the mechanism is similar to that occurring for pure apatite, and involved both surface complexation and calcium hydroyapatite (CaHA), Ca 10(PO 4) 6(OH) 2, dissolution followed by less soluble Pb 10(PO 4) 6(OH) 2 precipitation, as confirmed by XRD analysis of ashes after incubation with lead solution. Our results show that this natural apatite-rich material removes in a few minutes a large quantity of lead (275 mg/g capacity) which remains however lower than the theoretical maximum capacity (if calcium were totally substituted by lead). Meat and bone meal combustion residues represent a valuable alternative apatite source for environmental application.

    Low-Luminosity Gamma-Ray Bursts as a Distinct GRB Population:A Firmer Case from Multiple Criteria Constraints
    The intriguing observations of Swift/BAT X-ray flash XRF 060218 and the BATSE-BeppoSAX gamma-ray burst GRB 980425, both with much lower luminosity and redshift compared to other observed bursts, naturally lead to the question of how these low-luminosity (LL) bursts are related to high-luminosity (HL) bursts. Incorporating the constraints from both the flux-limited samples observed with CGRO/BATSE and Swift/BAT and the redshift-known GRB sample, we investigate the luminosity function for both LL- and HL-GRBs through simulations. Our multiple criteria, including the log N - log P distributions from the flux-limited GRB sample, the redshift and luminosity distributions of the redshift-known sample, and the detection ratio of HL- and LL- GRBs with Swift/BAT, provide a set of stringent constraints to the luminosity function. Assuming that the GRB rate follows the star formation rate, our simulations show that a simple power law or a broken power law model of luminosity function fail to reproduce the observations, and a new component is required. This component can be modeled with a broken power, which is characterized by a sharp increase of the burst number at around L < 10^47 erg s^-1}. The lack of detection of moderate-luminosity GRBs at redshift ~0.3 indicates that this feature is not due to observational biases. The inferred local rate, rho_0, of LL-GRBs from our model is ~ 200 Gpc^-3 yr^-1 at ~ 10^47 erg s^-1, much larger than that of HL-GRBs. These results imply that LL-GRBs could be a separate GRB population from HL-GRBs. The recent discovery of a local X-ray transient 080109/SN 2008D would strengthen our conclusion, if the observed non-thermal emission has a similar origin as the prompt emission of most GRBs and XRFs.
