Nuclear fusion is a process in which two or more atomic nuclei combine to form a single, heavier nucleus. It is the process that powers stars, including the Sun. During this process, matter is not conserved because some of the mass of the fusing nuclei is converted to energy, according to Einstein's equation E=mc2. Fusion reactions release large amounts of energy and can be used as a source of power generation.
