The Goldfinch is a 2019 American drama film directed by John Crowley and written by Peter Straughan, based on the 2013 novel of the same name by Donna Tartt. The film stars Ansel Elgort, Nicole Kidman, Oakes Fegley, Aneurin Barnard, Finn Wolfhard, Sarah Paulson, Luke Wilson, Jeffrey Wright and Denis O'Hare. It follows a young boy who survives a terrorist bombing at an art museum and is separated from his mother. He is taken in by a wealthy family friend and becomes enamored with a painting of a small bird chained to its perch. The film was released in the United States on September 13, 2019, by Warner Bros. Pictures and was met with mixed reviews from critics but grossed $31 million worldwide against its $45 million production budget.
