This special issue is focused on research that addresses problems of high relevance to the design and manufacture of pharmaceutical products. It is representative of the kinds of research that is defining the domain called pharmaceutical engineering (and) science. In this preface we will briefly sketch out why such research is needed, and needed now, and what some of the opportunity areas are. The issue contains 14 papers that have been selected to reinforce this message.
