Alan Alda (; born Alphonso Joseph D'Abruzzo; January 28, 1936) is an American actor, screenwriter, and director. A six-time Emmy Award and Golden Globe Award winner, he is best known for playing Captain Benjamin "Hawkeye" Pierce in the war comedy-drama television series M*A*S*H (1972–1983). He also wrote and directed numerous episodes of the series. Alda is also known for recurring roles on television series, such as The West Wing and Ray Donovan, and received critical acclaim for his appearances in films such as Same Time, Next Year (1978) alongside Ellen Burstyn and for his directorial debut film The Four Seasons (1981). Other film appearances include Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989), Flirting with Disaster (1996), the Cold War drama Bridge of Spies (2015), and Marriage Story (2019). In 2004, Alda was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Aviator.
