    Cryogenic storage dewar
A cryogenic storage dewar (named after James Dewar) is a specialised type of vacuum flask used for storing cryogens (such as liquid nitrogen or liquid helium), whose boiling points are much lower than room temperature. Cryogenic storage dewars may take several different forms including open buckets, flasks with loose-fitting stoppers and self-pressurising tanks. All dewars have walls constructed from two or more layers, with a high vacuum maintained between the layers. This provides very good thermal insulation between the interior and exterior of the dewar, which reduces the rate at which the contents boil away. Precautions are taken in the design of dewars to safely manage the gas which is released as the liquid slowly boils. The simplest dewars allow the gas to escape either through an open top or past a loose-fitting stopper to prevent the risk of explosion. More sophisticated dewars trap the gas above the liquid, and hold it at high pressure. This increases the boiling point of the liquid, allowing it to be stored for extended periods. Excessive vapour pressure is released automatically...

Predictive aberration correction for multilayer optical data storage
The recording of data in multiple layers, rather than a single layer, permits a significant increase in the capacity of optical data storage devices. However, focusing to the different layers introduces different amounts of depth-dependent aberrations. Variable aberration correction is therefore necessary to maintain diffraction-limited operation. We demonstrate the use of adaptive optics to predict and correct these aberrations for both the recording and read-out of such media.

Neutrino signals in electron-capture storage-ring experiments
Neutrino signals in electron-capture decays of hydrogen-like parent ions P in storage-ring experiments at GSI are reconsidered, with special emphasis placed on the storage-ring quasi-circular motion of the daughter ions D in two-body decays P --> D + e-neutrino. It is argued that to the extent that daughter ions are detected, these detection rates might exhibit modulations with periods of order seconds, similar to those reported in the GSI storage-ring experiments for two-body decay rates [1,2]. New dedicated experiments in storage rings, or using traps, could explore these modulations.

  • A cryogenic storage dewar is a type of vacuum flask used to store cryogens such as liquid nitrogen or liquid helium. It is also known as a cryogenic vessel. Cryogenic storage dewars are designed for the reliable and long-term storage of samples at very low temperatures. They are typically constructed of stainless steel, aluminum, or a combination of both materials and feature multilayer super insulation to minimize heat transfer into the stored material. They may also include additional features such as pressure relief valves, level gauges, and fill ports.
